Planning light and power for your outdoor kitchen
Good lighting makes the evening

Planning light and power for your outdoor kitchen

During the day, every outdoor kitchen looks great. The real test comes in the evening. If you can't see what you're chopping, your guests are sitting in the dark, and you're illuminating the grill with your phone's flashlight, something essential is missing.

Light is one of the most underestimated factors in planning an outdoor kitchen. Yet, excellent lighting makes the difference between "beautiful to look at" and "beautiful to use."

Two types of lighting you need

The most important rule: Separate task lighting and ambient lighting. They serve different purposes and should be controlled independently.

Task lighting is bright, direct, and glare-free. It belongs above the work surface, grill, and sink. You need to see what you're cutting, whether the meat is done, and if the seasonings are right.

Ambient lighting is warm, indirect, and diffused. It belongs in the dining area, along pathways, and in the surroundings. It creates atmosphere without glare.

If you control both with a single switch, you'll end up with either an operating room or total darkness. Separate controls solve the problem.

Task lighting: What works

LED spots under the canopy. The most effective solution. Small recessed spots directly above the work surface provide bright, targeted light. IP65 rating is essential for outdoor use.

LED strips under upper cabinets or shelves. If you have wall shelves above the work surface, mount LED strips underneath. Even illumination with a discreet look.

Gooseneck lights. Flexible fixtures you can direct exactly where needed. Ideal if you don't have a fixed canopy.

Color temperature: 4000 Kelvin (neutral white) is perfect for task lighting. Warm enough to avoid a clinical feel, bright enough for safe work.

Ambient lighting: What creates the mood

String lights. Simple, affordable, instantly effective. Stretched over the dining area, they create a warm atmosphere. Choose outdoor versions with IP44 protection.

Recessed ground lights. Along pathways or around the kitchen. Discreet, elegant, and you won't stumble over steps at night.

Indirect lighting. LED strips behind a fascia or under the worktop. Gives the kitchen a gentle glow without direct glare.

Candles and lanterns. Not every light source needs electricity. Real flames bring an ambiance no LED can replicate.

Color temperature: 2700 to 3000 Kelvin (warm white) for everything that sets the mood.

Planning power correctly

Lighting requires power. And power outdoors requires careful planning.

How many outlets? More than you think. Plan for at least four outdoor outlets: Two at the work surface (for mixers, chargers, lights), one in the dining area (for heaters or music), and one spare.

Protection rating. All outdoor outlets must be splash-proof (at least IP44). Outlets with flip covers and RCD protection are standard.

Cable routing. Cables should be laid underground or in protected conduits. Exposed cables across the ground are a safety hazard and look unsightly.

Plan a dedicated circuit. Your outdoor kitchen should have its own circuit with a dedicated RCD switch. If something trips outside, everything inside stays on.

Hire an electrician. Outdoor power is not a DIY project. Have the installation done by a professional. In Switzerland, this is mandatory for fixed installations anyway.

Smart control

If you like, control the lighting via a smart home system. Scenes like "Cooking," "Dining," or "Cleanup" activate the perfect combination of task and ambient lighting.

It's not essential, but it's a convenience that proves its worth in daily use. Especially if you don't want to hunt for three different switches every time.

Common mistakes in lighting planning

Only one light source. A single ceiling fixture lights everything equally poorly. You need at least two to three different sources.

Ambient lighting that's too bright. If the string lights are as bright as a spotlight, they miss the mark. Choose dimmers or lower-output bulbs.

Laying cables retrospectively. If you plan lighting after construction, you'll have visible cables or need to break open surfaces. Always plan ahead.

Forgetting glare. Ensure spots don't shine directly into your guests' eyes. Direct light downward, not into the space.

Costs

Basic lighting (string lights, one or two spots): CHF 200 to 500.

Thoughtful lighting concept (recessed spots, LED strips, ground lights): CHF 1,500 to 4,000 including installation.

Electrical installation (outlets, RCD switch, buried cables): CHF 2,000 to 5,000 depending on distance to the house.

Conclusion

Light and power are the invisible heroes of your outdoor kitchen. If they're missing, you'll notice immediately. If they're right, you won't notice at all—and that's the goal.
