Cooking Without Weather Worries

Outdoor Kitchen with Roof Covering

Rain while grilling, blinding sun, leaves on the work surface: Without a roof covering, the outdoor kitchen sometimes becomes a challenge. But does every kitchen really need a roof?

The short answer: No. But in most cases, it's worth it. A well-planned roof extends your usage time by months, protects materials and appliances, and makes cooking in any weather more enjoyable.

When is a roof covering worth it?

Whenever you cook often. If your outdoor kitchen is to be more than a summer plaything, you need protection. Rain comes to Switzerland not only in autumn, but right in the middle of July.

For sensitive appliances. Theiss outdoor kitchens are built with appliances specially developed for outdoor use: refrigerators, lighting, and sockets that permanently withstand wind, rain, and frost. With other brands, it's worth checking this precisely. Not every built-in refrigerator is designed for permanent outdoor deployment.

If you want to preserve the value. Ceramics and stainless steel, as we use them, are naturally UV- and water-resistant. For HPL fronts or cheaper surfaces, as many providers on the market use, a roof covering is actually important. It significantly reduces wear and noticeably extends the lifespan.

Variant 1: Pergola

The classic solution. A pergola creates structure, frames the kitchen, and can be enhanced with climbing plants, sun sails, or fabric panels.

Advantages: Flexible design, relatively affordable, natural appearance.

Disadvantages: No complete rain protection without additional covering. Limited effectiveness in winter.

Costs: From CHF 3'000 for simple wooden pergolas, from CHF 6'000 for aluminum with sun protection.

Variant 2: Louvered Roof

Louvered roofs can be opened and closed depending on the weather. Some models even respond automatically to rain and wind.

Advantages: Flexible protection, modern aesthetic, automatable, adjustable ventilation.

Disadvantages: Higher costs, requires power connection for motorized versions.

Costs: From CHF 8'000, motorized systems from CHF 12'000.

Variant 3: Fixed Roof or Glass Roof

Maximum protection with maximum investment. A fixed roof or glass covering renders your outdoor kitchen nearly weatherproof.

Advantages: Year-round protection, premium appearance, long lifespan.

Disadvantages: Building permit possibly required, highest costs, less flexible.

Costs: From CHF 15'000 upwards, depending on size and material.

Variant 4: Awning or Sun Sail

The lightest and most affordable solution. Ideal as an entry point or supplement, but not full weather protection.

Advantages: Affordable, quick to install, flexibly positionable.

Disadvantages: No rain protection in strong winds, limited lifespan.

Costs: From CHF 500 for a sun sail, from CHF 2'000 for a cassette awning.

What to Consider in Planning

Height. Your roof must be high enough for smoke to dissipate. At least 2.50 meters clear height above the grill. Less critical with gas than with charcoal.

Ventilation. A completely enclosed roof without air circulation traps heat and smoke. Louvered systems or open sides solve this.

Drainage. Where does the rainwater from the roof flow? Plan a gutter or a slope that directs water away from the kitchen.

Building Permit. In Switzerland, a fixed built roof covering may require approval. Check your municipality's regulations before construction. Freestanding pergolas and lightweight sun sails are usually permit-free.

Integration. The roof covering should harmonize with the house and surroundings. A modern louvered roof next to a wooden chalet looks out of place. And vice versa.

The Most Common Mistakes

Planned too small. The roof should cover not only the cooking area, but also the dining area and walkways. Otherwise, you're sitting in the rain while the grill stays dry.

Lighting forgotten. Under the roof, it's darker. Plan lighting for work surfaces and dining area from the outset.

No wind protection. A roof protects from above, but rain in Switzerland rarely falls straight down. A side wall or windbreak makes the roof covering truly effective.

What We Recommend

For most outdoor kitchens in Switzerland, a louvered roof is the best solution. It provides flexible protection, looks exceptional, and adapts to most homes and properties.

If you're starting with a smaller budget, a pergola with fabric spanning is a great entry point. Crucially, plan the posts and foundations to allow for future upgrades.
